For Faculty: Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) is a secure browser for taking tests in Canvas. The lockdown browser is suited for taking tests in a proctored environment, such as in-class exams or in testing center. Respondus Monitor is a companion application for LockDown Browser that uses a student’s webcam to record them while they are. Locate the 'Install Respondus LockDown Browser xxxxxxxxx.pkg' to start the actual LockDown Browser installer. Accept all the default prompts to install LockDown Browser. Go to Finder-Applications and double click on the 'LockDown Browser' icon (a world globe with padlock) to start LockDown Browser. The version of Lockdown Browser available in Rutgers Canvas and Sakai is different than the version from Rutgers Blackboard. If you need to use Lockdown Browser to take an exam or quiz in both Rutgers Blackboard and Canvas/Sakai, then you will need to install two versions of.

Respondus LockDown Browser is an online proctoring software that is used in the education field to monitor students while they take tests. A free trial is available.Both students and teachers will need to download the app to use the program to take exams online and to review test results. To download the LockDown Browser, follows these simple steps: 1. Click on the HELP button on the Canvas Menu. Click on the Student Resources link. Scroll down the page to Downloads. Click on the download link: Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor.

Used in conjunction with the Canvas Quizzes tool, Respondus offers two products to increase the integrity of online exams. Lockdown Browser is a custom browser that allows you literally lock down the online testing environment within the learning management system, preventing students from moving away from the testing browser to another browser or application on their machine. Respondus Monitor, integrated in Respondus Lockdown Browser, provides additional exam integrity by monitoring student activity during an exam session. Using the student’s web camera, Monitor is a fully automated proctoring solution that enables students to take online exams at any time without pre-scheduling an exam session.

Respondus Lockdown Browser prohibits the tester’s ability to navigate away from the testing environment or to open any other windows or applications during testing. Many instructors find this very helpful in maintaining online assessment integrity. While in the Lockdown Browser, testers view the assessment full screen and cannot minimize the window. The assessment also cannot be closed out until it is submitted for grading. Print, Print Screen, and screen capture functions do not work while the assessment is open and testers are unable to copy and paste anything to/from the assessment. Respondus Monitor increases exam integrity by providing a report to let instructors know if the student left the camera view or if another person came into the view.

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized
  • Assessments cannot be exited until submitted by users for grading
  • Task switching or access to other applications is prevented
  • Printing functions are disabled
  • Copying and pasting anything to and from an assessment is prohibited
  • Right-click menu options are disabled (Windows); key + click options are disabled (Mac)
  • URLs cannot be typed by the user while links in questions that point to other servers don’t compromise the “locked” testing environment
  • Hundreds of screen capture, messaging, screen-sharing and network monitoring applications are blocked from running
  • The browser automatically starts at Rutgers login page for Canvas
  • No advanced scheduling required

Rutgers has an enterprise license for Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor.

Instructors should note that this tool does not restrict students from using other internet-enabled devices (tablets, smartphones, etc.) to search the web or Canvas site. Students should have administrator rights to install, update and run applications on their computer.

Respondus Monitor for students

Respondus Monitor is an online test proctoring software system integrated into Canvas. It is an additional feature of Respondus LockDown Browser that uses a webcam to provide synchronous test proctoring.

How To Use Respondus Lockdown Browser In Canvas

When Respondus Monitor is enabled for a quiz or exam, students are required to use a webcam and microphone with Lockdown Browser. After the quiz is complete, an instructor can review recorded details of the assessment, with the videos available.

Respondus Lockdown Browser Canvas Download Free

Respondus LockDown Browser™ is a secure browser for taking exams in Canvas. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If a Canvas exam requires that Respondus LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser.

Respondus LockDown Browser is only used for Canvas tests. It is not be used in other areas of Canvas.

LockDown Browser is installed on the computers in both Carrier Library and Rose Library. If you’re taking a test in Canvas that requires the use of LockDown Browser, you can use any of our computers.

To install and use Respondus LockDown Browser

  1. Install Pulse Secure before you download Respondus Lockdown Browser for your JMU classes.
  2. Download the Respondus Lockdown Browser here.
    1. Note: this link will most likely detect your operating system You will likely see James Madison University above the “Install Now” button. Choose the Windows or Macintosh version if necessary. You cannot use LockDown Browser with a personally-owned Chromebook. Please let your instructor know as soon as possible if you do not have access to a compatible device.
    2. You may want to review the download instructions in the Respondus Knowledgebase.
  3. After downloading and installing LockDown Browser, use your usual web browser to navigate to your quiz in Canvas.
    1. If the quiz you are trying to take was created with New Quizzes in Canvas, LockDown Browser should automatically launch,
    2. If LockDown Browser does not automatically launch, exit your web browser. Locate LockDown Browser on your machine and launch the application. You should be taken to the Canvas login screen, where you can navigate to your quiz.
